Usability test builder

The usability test builder extends the survey builder with interactive task question types and prototype assignment per page.

These appear only in usability tests (category Interactive Tasks):

TypeDescription
Goal-based taskParticipant completes a defined goal on a prototype; success and path analytics
Free explorationOpen-ended exploration with tracking for a set duration
First click taskWhere would you click first? — heatmap-style analysis
5-second testBrief exposure, then follow-up recall questions
Preference testCompare two or more designs or variants

All standard study content types (choice, NPS, matrix, etc.) are also available after or between tasks.

Assign a prototype to a page so the participant sees the interactive embed during tasks:

  1. Add or select a page in the builder.
  2. Link a prototype from Assets & Media (Figma frame, ProtoPie flow, etc.).
  3. Place one interactive task on that page (only one interactive task is allowed per page).

Pages and sections support Compare assets (asset display logic) — show different prototypes to different participants based on a randomisation variable or a condition (URL, sample, answers).

See Group comparison and routing for when to use compare assets vs section randomisation vs display logic.

Use early pages with:

  • Legal / consent content blocks
  • Qualification logic on pages — disqualify participants who fail screener rules

Unqualified participants should see a thank-you or exit page without continuing to tasks.

Groups defined at creation (or in logic) work with:

  • Randomization variables
  • Between-subjects prototype assignment
  • Section-level branching

The Preview tab uses TestPreview with prototype embedding:

  • Verifies prototype URLs and Figma connections
  • Prompts for recording permissions when enabled
  • Simulates device constraints when Allowed devices is set

Public preview: /preview/{id} or /usability-tests/{id}/preview.

  • Task pages are task-only — one interactive task per page; no other blocks on that page. Put instructions on the page before the task (or in the task title/description) and follow-up questions on pages after.
  • Add another page for each additional task.
  • Test on the same device classes you allow in Configure.
